THE CHALLENGES OF KANZEI

No two students at Kanzei High School are alike, each has different skills and abilities. Therefore, the “one size fits all” approach to teaching English does not work. One of the most important points within my classes is the small number of students (approximately 15 per group). Doing this allows me to build a closer relationship with my students, to understand and provide for each individual students needs.

Programs

Program #1English class by native speakers
At General Course,
IT Business Course

General Course

IT Business Course

English is not only for college admission but also for use within business.
Both the general course and the IT business course have a communication class once a week. Two native speakers are in charge of the classes. One teacher is from Britain and the other from America. They teach students only in English. Students start to learn by listening to authentic English. Then, they are encouraged to speak English.

Program #2You can talk to a native speaker
in English
At English Emergency Room,
On Mondays,
after school

General Course

IT Business Course

EI Engineering Course

Students don’t need to go to a language school outside school. All they need to do is visit the “English Emergency Room”, which is open after school 15:30-16:30 on Mondays(2024). They can ask any question about English and ask for advice on learning English. They can enjoy talking with a teacher from Britain in a casual way.

Program #3Brush up skills to think and
express yourself for
college entrance exams.

General Course

English ability includes four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.
All of them help you think actively and express yourself. Such skills are becoming more important for the new college entrance exams. For students who want to go on to college, we teach “how to consider a given topic” and ”how to describe it” in English.

Program #4Improve English to analyze and
think logically.

General Course

available to the Super Science Course students only

On the Super Science Course, mathematics and science are the main subjects.
It is important for students to analyze and process numerical data scientifically.
It is also important to think logically, using such data and to describe it in English.

ColumnCultural exchange with people
from different countries
Communication only in English

General Course

available to the National University Course students only

In 2018, we held a special event for the National University Course, several college students came together for a two-day program. They were all from different countries and they had various backgrounds. The main activity was a group discussion. They worked as facilitators to encourage students to speak a lot of English. Students were able to improve their speaking abilities because they had to speak English all day. At the end of the program, every single student made a presentation. This program was a great chance to learn about the diversity of races and cultures and to recognize English as “a world language”.

Toshiki Kodera

3rd year, General,
national university course

The advantage of studying English is that it broadens your horizons.

I began to learn English when I was a seventh grader and soon I became good at it.
I liked seeing movies in English. In high school, I participated in an external presentation contest. My topic was “prejudice experienced by Muslim women”. I had a chance to meet a lady from Egypt at the summer program in 2018. I made a speech based on that experience. When I talked to the audience, I realized how important language is. When I tried to give them my message, I felt English was not only useful but also powerful.
Now I would like to be a professional with special skills to work actively worldwide. We have very few chances to meet native speakers. English education of Kanzei High School is really precious for me. At our English classes, we can talk to teachers and learn how to speak English.

Yuki Yoshioka

2nd year, IT business, advanced course

Speak English as much as you can.
It made me more fluent.

I have been good at English since I was a junior high school student. Especially I liked reading, but my English was not so good because it was often mixed in with Japanese words. Now we have a class taught only in English. My English has greatly improved and it has become more natural by getting used to our teacher’s authentic English. I usually say “Hello” when I see him on the corridor. I would like to get involved in physical therapy in the future. Now I would like to learn English for college admission.
